China Orders Massive Recall of EVs Over Dangerous 'Sleek' Door Handles

Nearly three million Teslas and millions of other vehicles face safety mandates after design flaws trap occupants.

The obsession with 'sleek' aesthetic design in the electric vehicle industry has hit a dangerous wall, as Chinese authorities have mandated a recall of over 4 million vehicles—including nearly 3 million Teslas—due to hidden door handle designs that pose a severe safety hazard.

These handles, which often blend into the vehicle's trim, have been flagged for being difficult to locate and operate during emergency situations. The recall comes after fatal crashes involving Xiaomi EVs raised alarms about power failures preventing doors from opening.

Tesla, along with Chinese manufacturers XPeng, Xiaomi, and Geely, must now apply warning labels to interiors and issue software updates to automatically lower windows during a collision. While these measures are being implemented, industry experts have dismissed them as mere 'band-aids' for a fundamental design flaw.

The Chinese government has already moved to ban these hidden handles entirely, with new regulations taking effect in 2027 that will require mechanical releases on all doors.

This is not the first time these designs have faced scrutiny; US safety regulators have previously probed Tesla over reports of children being trapped in vehicles due to handle malfunctions.

As the industry prioritizes form over function, regulators are now being forced to consider new, mandatory safety standards to ensure that a car’s design does not become a death trap for its occupants.
