Trump Administration Keeps Distance as UK Targets Israeli Settlements

Washington refuses to intervene in British sanctions against Israel, signaling growing friction between the White House and Netanyahu.

The United Kingdom has launched a provocative diplomatic assault on Israel, imposing sanctions on settlements in the West Bank and triggering a sharp retaliatory response from Jerusalem.

Israel has responded by shuttering Britain’s diplomatic mission to the Palestinians, expelling UK military personnel, and barring several left-wing British members of parliament from entry. Despite the escalation, Washington has notably declined to provide the usual diplomatic shield for its ally.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio offered only a tepid acknowledgment of the UK's move, stating the U.S. would not follow suit but stopping short of any meaningful rebuke. President Trump, meanwhile, has indicated he is seeking further clarity on the situation before taking a stance.

Behind the scenes, the lack of an urgent, full-throated defense of the Israeli government appears rooted in mounting frustration within the Trump administration.

The White House is currently focused on high-stakes diplomacy regarding Iran and a Gaza peace initiative—efforts that have been repeatedly complicated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s independent military maneuvers.

Furthermore, the administration has grown increasingly irritated by the lack of accountability regarding violence in the West Bank, which threatens to undermine Trump’s efforts to secure cooperation from Gulf Arab allies.

For now, the White House has decided that expending political capital to defend the current Israeli leadership against European sanctions is a price it is not willing to pay.
