Chinese Box Office Chaos: Low-Budget 'Niu Lai' Becomes Viral Sensation

A film mocked for its abysmal animation and incoherent plot is raking in millions as Chinese audiences embrace the 'so bad it's good' phenomenon.

The Chinese film industry is currently witnessing an absurd spectacle as 'Niu Lai,' a low-budget animation featuring a cow in a dream sequence, has transformed from a commercial failure into a massive box office hit.

After grossing a measly 7,705 yuan in its first ten days, the film has surged to over 11.4 million yuan, competing directly with major Hollywood releases. The film’s popularity is driven largely by ironic social media trends, where users praise its amateurish quality as an 'authentic' alternative to AI-generated content.

Beyond the irony, some viewers are flocking to the theaters as a superstitious gesture, hoping that supporting a movie about a 'bull'—which shares a character with the word for 'cow' in Chinese—will trigger a bullish stock market rally.

The success has been so chaotic that theaters, lacking official promotional materials, have resorted to drawing their own posters to accommodate the unexpected demand. However, the state-owned Beijing News is not amused, issuing a stern warning that cinemas are 'lowering the bar' and risking public trust by screening such low-quality productions.

The outlet demanded that theaters act as 'gatekeepers' and reject films that fail to meet professional standards, highlighting the tension between market-driven viral trends and state-sanctioned cultural expectations.
