German Chancellor Merz Clings to Power as Coalition Crumbles

Facing historic electoral defeats and a surging opposition, Merz insists his failing coalition remains essential for Germany’s future.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is desperately attempting to hold his fractured coalition together after his Christian Democratic Unionist (CDU) party suffered a series of humiliating defeats in recent state elections.

With the CDU failing to even clear the 5% threshold in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and falling behind the hard-left Die Linke in Berlin, Merz faces mounting pressure to step down after only 16 months in office.

While Merz describes the results as a 'profound turning point' and a 'disaster,' he continues to deflect blame for his party's collapse, claiming the issues go beyond his own dismal approval ratings.

The political landscape in Germany is shifting rapidly, with the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party making significant gains by championing an anti-immigration and national-sovereignty platform.

Meanwhile, the hard-left victory in Berlin has emboldened radicals who are now threatening to seize over 200,000 private housing units, a move Merz claims he will oppose to protect foreign investment.

As rumors of a potential mid-term chancellor swap circulate, opposition leaders like the AfD’s Alice Weidel have made it clear they believe Merz’s time in office is rapidly coming to an end.
