Federal immigration agents are standing by their account of a fatal traffic stop in Houston that resulted in the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, an undocumented Mexican national. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reports that the incident occurred during a targeted enforcement operation aimed at apprehending an illegal alien.
According to official statements, agents initiated the stop after identifying a vehicle that matched the description of a target under surveillance. DHS maintains that the situation escalated when the driver attempted to evade arrest and rammed an ICE vehicle, forcing an agent to fire in self-defense.
While the victim’s family and passengers in the van have disputed the official account, federal investigations are currently underway. The DHS Office of Inspector General is conducting an internal review, while the FBI is leading an investigation into the potential assault on a federal officer.
Despite calls from local politicians for an independent probe, Houston police officials have acknowledged that under federal law, local authorities lack jurisdiction to investigate federal agents acting in their official capacity.
