The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have executed a lightning offensive in Yemen, seizing 130km of strategic coastline and effectively cementing their control over the Bab al-Mandab strait.

This military coup marks a dangerous escalation in the region, as Tehran’s proxies now exert dominance over two of the world’s most critical maritime passages: the Strait of Hormuz and the gateway to the Red Sea.

By controlling these choke points, Iran and its network of terrorists now hold sway over more than 35% of the global fuel and oil trade, a strategic advantage that experts warn carries as much geopolitical weight as a nuclear weapon.

Despite years of coalition efforts and targeted strikes, the Houthis remain entrenched and emboldened, with analysts tracing the surge in aggression directly to a recent delegation visit to Tehran.

While the Biden-era failures and current political hesitations in Washington leave allies like Saudi Arabia vulnerable, the reality on the ground is clear: Iran is successfully weaponizing its proxies to strangle international shipping and destabilize the global economy.

As the Houthis solidify their hold on the coast, they gain the ability to project power with missiles, drones, and small attack boats, rendering the Red Sea increasingly hazardous for international commerce.

This development represents a significant failure of containment, leaving the international community to face the consequences of a emboldened Iranian regime that shows no sign of backing down.
