South Korea's Tom Kim at the Asian Games

Professional golfer Tom Kim has secured a path to continue his lucrative PGA Tour career uninterrupted after clinching gold at the Asian Games.

By winning the tournament, Kim qualifies for a government-sanctioned exemption from South Korea's mandatory military service, a requirement that typically demands 18 to 21 months of service from able-bodied males before they reach age 28.

While the average South Korean citizen must put their life and career on hold to serve their nation, elite athletes are granted a loophole that reduces their obligation to less than a month of basic training.

Kim, who currently ranks 32nd in the world, flew in from the United States to compete in the games, ultimately finishing 18 under par to secure the victory. This exemption allows him to avoid the disruption that his compatriot, 28-year-old SH Kim, now faces after failing to secure gold in the team event.

Tom Kim’s success ensures he can remain on the professional circuit, where he has already claimed four PGA Tour titles, without the burden of fulfilling the standard national service expected of his peers.
