Jellyfish swarm cripples French nuclear power station

Nature's interference forces partial shutdown at Gravelines plant, exposing vulnerabilities in energy infrastructure.

The Gravelines nuclear power station in northern France is facing a significant operational crisis after a massive swarm of jellyfish clogged the facility's seawater filtration system. The influx forced the shutdown of multiple units, with operator Électricité de France (EDF) confirming that units three, four, and six are currently offline.

This is the second consecutive year that the plant has been crippled by jellyfish, proving that current mitigation efforts—including a partnership with local fishermen to relocate the creatures—are failing to secure the facility's output.

The station, which relies on the North Sea to cool its six 900-megawatt reactors, is now operating at reduced capacity as units one and two run at lower power levels as a precaution.

While bureaucrats may point to seasonal plankton levels and warm weather as the cause, the reality is that the facility is struggling to maintain consistent energy production against basic environmental factors. Similar incidents have occurred at nuclear plants in Scotland and Sweden, yet these disruptions remain a persistent threat to grid stability.

As France continues to rely on these massive nuclear installations, the inability to prevent simple biological interference raises serious questions about the long-term reliability of these critical energy assets.
