The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has moved quickly to address a breach of conduct after two soldiers were filmed vandalizing a statue of Jesus in the Lebanese village of Debel. The soldiers, one of whom struck the statue with a sledgehammer while the other documented the act, have been sentenced to 30 days of military detention and removed from combat duty.
An additional six soldiers present at the scene are also facing disciplinary action for failing to intervene or report the incident. The IDF issued a formal statement expressing deep regret, noting that the conduct was a complete deviation from military orders and values.
To rectify the situation, Israeli troops have already coordinated with the local community to replace the damaged statue. The military reiterated that its ongoing operations in the region are strictly focused on neutralizing the Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah, not the Lebanese civilian population. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S.
Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee both condemned the act, with the Ambassador calling for swift and severe consequences. While the incident has drawn international attention, the IDF remains engaged in a critical security campaign against Hezbollah, which has been firing rockets into Israel since February.
Israel’s commitment to maintaining discipline within its ranks stands in stark contrast to the actions of the terrorist groups it continues to dismantle in the region.
