Atefeh Ramezanisadeh and Fatemeh Pasandideh have been naturalized as Australian citizens in Brisbane, marking the end of a high-profile defection from the Iranian national team. The two women were part of a group of seven players who initially sought humanitarian visas while in Australia for the Women's Asian Cup in March.

Their decision to seek asylum followed their refusal to sing the Iranian national anthem during a match, an act of defiance that drew the ire of the Tehran regime and led to state media labeling them as 'traitors.' While five of their teammates eventually chose to return to Iran—a move the Iranian sports ministry lauded as a victory for 'patriotism'—Ramezanisadeh and Pasandideh chose to remain in the West.

The players, who have since been training with the Brisbane Roar, received their citizenship certificates from Interior Minister Tony Burke. This development comes as the Australian government faces mounting pressure to tighten its migration policies and restrict the rights of asylum seekers.

The incident highlights the ongoing instability within Iran and the risks faced by those who openly challenge the regime's authority.
