US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth testifies to a Senate panel on 21 July 2026

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth appeared before the Senate Appropriations Committee this week to demand $87 billion in emergency funding, a necessary step to reverse the damage caused by years of underfunding under the previous administration.

Hegseth made it clear that the current cost of operations against the Iranian regime has reached $37.5 billion, and without immediate congressional support, the military faces critical gaps in training, equipment replenishment, and troop compensation.

Despite the urgent need to maintain peace through strength, the hearing was repeatedly derailed by anti-war agitators and partisan grandstanding from Democrats who seem more interested in political theater than national security.

Hegseth rightly pushed back against critics, including Senator Gary Peters, whose accusations of a 'forever war' ignore the reality that the U.S. is responding to direct Iranian hostilities.

While fiscal hawks and Democrats debate the price tag, the reality remains that the military is currently paying the price for the Biden administration's failure to adequately prepare our forces.

As the nation mourns the loss of brave service members killed in the region, the Pentagon is focused on building the lethality required to deter adversaries and ensure that American forces are never forced to play catch-up against global threats.
