The Iranian regime has doubled down on its oppressive crackdown against personal expression, with an appeals court confirming a sentence of 74 lashes for singer Parastoo Ahmadi.

Ahmadi, 29, was targeted by the judiciary after a livestreamed concert on her YouTube channel showed her performing in a sleeveless dress without a headscarf—a direct violation of the country’s mandatory hijab laws. In addition to the flogging, Ahmadi and eight members of her team were hit with a two-year ban on audiovisual activities and a travel ban.

The appeals court rejected their challenge without even granting a hearing, signaling the regime's clear intent to use the singer as an example to deter any further defiance of their cultural and legal mandates. This brutal sentencing is part of a broader, long-standing pattern of state-sponsored intimidation.

The Iranian legal system, rooted in a strict interpretation of Sharia, continues to treat basic personal choices as criminal offenses. Despite international outcry and the widespread protests that have erupted in the country since 2022, the clerical establishment remains committed to its iron-fisted enforcement of dress codes.

The regime’s willingness to utilize corporal punishment—a practice condemned by human rights groups as torture—underscores the reality of life under a theocratic government that views artistic freedom and individual autonomy as existential threats to its power.
