The streets of Jakarta erupted in protest this Friday as hundreds of students confronted the government over the failing economic policies of President Prabowo Subianto. Demonstrators are sounding the alarm on a fiscal trajectory they warn will lead the nation to bankruptcy, specifically targeting the administration's signature $28 billion free meal program.

This massive government spending initiative, which officials attempt to justify as an 'investment,' has instead been marred by reports of mass food poisonings and rampant corruption. The economic fallout is already being felt by the middle class, as the government recently hiked fuel prices by over 30% to help subsidize these bloated state programs.

As the rupiah hits fresh lows, the public is rightfully furious that their tax dollars are being squandered on inefficient bureaucracy while their own cost of living skyrockets. While protesters attempted to march toward the Hotel Indonesia roundabout, they were met by police barricades.

Despite the administration's claims of constitutional protections for speech, students reported being suppressed by authorities as they chanted against the rising cost of survival.

With the hashtag #MenujuIndonesiaBangkrut—meaning 'Towards Bankrupt Indonesia'—trending online, it is clear that the public has lost patience with a government that prioritizes expensive pet projects over fiscal responsibility.
