The Russian military is intensifying its efforts to choke off Ukraine’s economy, launching a relentless barrage of strikes against Odesa’s port infrastructure. The human cost of this aggression is mounting, with workers like Svitlana Halchenko mourning colleagues killed by ballistic missiles while on the job.

According to data from Ukraine’s port administration, July saw a staggering 57 attacks on civilian vessels and 67 strikes on port facilities. The carnage reached a grim milestone on July 19, when a Turkish-owned cargo ship, the Golden Leo, was struck by three Russian missiles, resulting in the deaths of nine crew members.

These attacks have turned the Black Sea into one of the most dangerous maritime regions in the world, forcing port operations to shut down for up to 15 hours a day. The economic fallout is severe, with Ukraine’s grain export capacity significantly hampered during the critical harvest season.

While the Kremlin attempts to frame its actions as retaliation for Ukraine’s strikes on Russian vessels, the reality is a systematic blockade that threatens global food security.

Despite the constant threat of sirens and explosive debris, the people of Odesa continue to face the reality of a war that has brought the front line directly to their docks, leaving workers and civilians alike to bear the brunt of Moscow’s hostility.
