The rule of law is not a suggestion, and South African officials are finally holding Chidimma Adetshina accountable for her questionable citizenship status. Adetshina, who gained notoriety after participating in the 2024 Miss South Africa pageant, has been declared a prohibited person following an investigation that stripped her of her identity documents.

The government’s case centers on allegations that her mother committed identity fraud to secure nationality, a critical point given that birth on South African soil does not grant automatic citizenship unless a parent is a legal resident or citizen.

The Home Affairs Department has presented evidence suggesting that Adetshina applied for visas and Nigerian passports while abroad, directly contradicting her claims of South African citizenship. Furthermore, officials allege she bypassed legal entry requirements by crossing into the country through a Mozambican border post.

Despite her attempts to frame the enforcement of immigration law as 'xenophobia' or 'unfair treatment,' the reality is a straightforward case of document fraud and illegal migration.

While Adetshina continues to play the victim, even going so far as to compete in and win the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant after fleeing the controversy, the South African government remains committed to its legal proceedings.

Her case has been postponed until 2027, but the message remains clear: national sovereignty and the integrity of citizenship are not to be undermined by those who treat immigration laws as optional.
