Beijing's AI Race: China's Infrastructure Maniacs Build Massive Data Hubs

While the CCP pushes for AI dominance, rural citizens are displaced and left behind by a state-run tech agenda.

Rows of data centres being built in Inner Mongolia

In the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, the Chinese Communist Party is bulldozing its way to AI dominance. Ulanqab, once known for its potato harvests, is being transformed into a digital frontier as Beijing constructs massive data centers at a breakneck pace.

These facilities are the backbone of the CCP’s mission to embed artificial intelligence across 90% of its industries by 2030, a move the regime views as critical for both economic and national security. While the CCP touts this as a triumph of 'China speed,' the reality on the ground is far less glamorous.

Local farmers report being displaced from their land to make way for these industrial monoliths, with little transparency regarding compensation. Many residents express deep skepticism, noting that this state-funded 'big data' does nothing to improve their daily lives, which remain plagued by economic stagnation and poverty.

Despite the regime's efforts to project strength, the project highlights the stark divide between Beijing’s high-tech ambitions and the struggles of its citizens.

Furthermore, the CCP is aggressively leveraging open-source models to bypass American restrictions on advanced chip imports, attempting to set global standards that favor their own regulatory framework.

As President Trump and the U.S. industry warn that a Chinese lead in AI poses a grave danger to global security, Beijing continues to prioritize state-directed innovation over individual liberty, even as its own academics admit that the country’s rigid, conformist system remains a significant hurdle to true creative progress.
