Gloria Steinem stands as a defining figure of the American feminist movement, a career that spanned decades and fundamentally altered the nation's social and political landscape.

Rising to prominence in the 1960s and 70s, Steinem championed causes including the legalization of abortion, the Equal Rights Amendment, and the advancement of women in the public sphere.

Her path to influence began with a notable 1963 exposé in Show magazine, where she went undercover as a Playboy Bunny to highlight the conditions within Hugh Hefner’s organization. While the piece brought her notoriety, she frequently noted the difficulty she faced in being taken seriously by male-dominated media outlets of the era.

In 1972, Steinem co-founded Ms. magazine, a publication that served as a platform for feminist discourse and challenged the traditional focus of women's periodicals.

Her activism was marked by a commitment to reproductive rights—a cause she embraced after sharing her own experience with an illegal abortion—and the formation of the National Women's Political Caucus.

Throughout her life, Steinem faced significant backlash, ranging from criticism by fellow feminists like Betty Friedan to hostile harassment from political opponents and media figures.

Her career was not without contradictions, including her controversial 1998 defense of Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, a stance she later expressed regret over.

Despite the polarization surrounding her work, Steinem remained a consistent, if controversial, voice in American public life, eventually receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
