CCTV footage shows people fleeing as a wall of mud and water destroys buildings at the Nepal-China border in Gyirong, Tibet, China, on August 26, 2026.

A terrifying wall of water, mud, and boulders surged down the Himalayan valley at the Nepal-China border, leaving a scene of total destruction in its wake. CCTV footage from the Gyirong crossing captured the moment the debris flow, triggered by a glacial collapse, slammed into the border complex with lethal force.

The disaster has left more than 100 Indians missing, with hundreds more unaccounted for as authorities struggle to reconstruct the final moments of those caught in the torrent.

Electronic immigration records indicate that the crossing was bustling with activity just minutes before the flood hit at approximately 10:52 local time, with dozens of foreign nationals—including Americans, British, and Chinese citizens—having recently cleared the checkpoint.

The infrastructure, which served as a primary trade route for electronics and electric vehicles, was effectively erased, with buildings and businesses reduced to ruins. This tragedy highlights the extreme risks of the region’s geologically volatile terrain, which has seen repeated flooding in recent years.

While officials scramble to account for the missing, including several immigration staff members, the loss of this vital trade artery has left Nepal’s economy reeling.

Experts are now calling for a total reassessment of the nation's reliance on this specific border corridor, as the disaster serves as a grim reminder of the dangers inherent in building critical infrastructure within such high-risk, unstable environments.
