Barrier lake formed near Nepal and Tibet border

The region near the Nepal-Tibet border remains on high alert as a dangerous barrier lake, formed in the wake of a deadly flash flood, threatens to breach its banks. Following the collapse of a mountain glacier near Langtang Lirung, debris has dammed the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers, creating a volatile reservoir.

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, approximately 2.5 million cubic meters of water had accumulated by Friday, with millions more expected to flow into the lake. While rescue operations were briefly suspended due to the lake overflowing, state media claims the situation is currently under control.

However, experts warn that the region remains unstable. Geoscientist Jakob Steiner noted that the mountain slopes remain vulnerable to further collapses, which could trigger additional debris flows into the lake. With heavy rainfall and storms forecasted, the potential for a secondary flood remains a serious concern.

While some experts suggest the lake may drain naturally as the melting season concludes, the lack of road access prevents the deployment of heavy machinery to artificially stabilize the site. Nepali authorities have issued stern warnings for residents to stay clear of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers as the threat of further blockages and surges persists.

This disaster follows a catastrophic flash flood that has already left hundreds dead or missing on both sides of the border.
