When disaster struck in Nepal, it was not government bureaucracy or a slow-moving warning system that saved 900 lives, but the decisive, immediate action of a single headteacher. Rajendra Dawadi, principal of Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School, received four urgent warnings regarding incoming floodwaters at 09:10 local time.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation and the reliability of the reports, Dawadi bypassed hesitation and ordered an immediate evacuation. He instructed students to flee to higher ground and halted incoming school buses. His intuition was validated when a parent arrived specifically to retrieve their child, confirming the impending danger.

Ten minutes after the last student cleared the area, the floodwaters arrived, burying the school in mud and debris. While the disaster has claimed at least 794 lives and left thousands missing, the students of Tribhuvan Trishuli survived because their leader prioritized safety over the status quo of a school day.

Students like 16-year-old Yunisha Amatya recounted a harrowing escape, noting that those who chose different routes were swept away by the torrent.

While the community now faces the difficult task of rebuilding and addressing the failure of regional warning infrastructure, Dawadi’s swift command serves as a stark reminder that in life-or-death situations, individual responsibility and quick decision-making are the ultimate safeguards.
