Chancellor Merz on the Brink as German Voters Head to the Polls

The embattled leader faces a potential political reckoning as his party struggles to contain a surge from the right and a crumbling domestic approval rating.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing a defining moment for his leadership as voters in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern head to the polls. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is bracing for potential electoral defeats that could signal the end of Merz’s tenure after just 16 months in power.

The political landscape in Germany has shifted dramatically, with the nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party continuing its momentum following a landslide victory in Saxony-Anhalt.

Merz, a former corporate lawyer, has seen his party's support erode while he struggles to address a stagnant economy, soaring energy costs, and the fallout from mass immigration. Despite his attempt to pivot right on immigration and his blunt calls for Germans to work more and take less sick leave, he has failed to win over a disillusioned public.

Critics within his own ranks argue that Merz is out of touch and lacks the necessary connection to the average citizen. With the CDU teetering on the edge of historic lows in state polling, the pressure is mounting for a change in leadership.

Merz has vowed to push forward with a package of economic and welfare reforms, but with his approval ratings in freefall and party insiders openly questioning his future, the chancellor may find he has run out of time to save his administration.
