Frustrated residents demand answers as government aid package fails to quell public anger over fire management strategies.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu was greeted with hostility and protests during a visit to Le Porge, a town in southwestern France where 183 homes were destroyed by wildfires. Approximately 200 residents gathered to voice their anger, with organizers claiming they were blocked from speaking with the Prime Minister by lines of riot police.

Residents are demanding accountability regarding the tactical decisions made during the fires, specifically questioning why professional firefighting resources were allegedly diverted to defend the Cap Ferret tourist peninsula while volunteers were left to manage other areas.

While Lecornu announced a €12 million aid package for the Gironde and Landes regions and promised expedited building permits for reconstruction, the gesture did little to satisfy those who are now planning to file formal complaints seeking transparency.

The crisis extends far beyond France, as Europe grapples with a wave of wildfires that have claimed lives and forced mass evacuations across Belgium, Greece, Spain, and Croatia. In Croatia, authorities have taken a firm stance on accountability, arresting four individuals suspected of intentionally starting fires across 10 locations in Zadar.

As European nations struggle to contain these blazes, the political pressure on leadership to justify their emergency response strategies continues to mount.
