The French coastguard was forced to intervene this weekend, rescuing 106 individuals from a single vessel that broke down during an illegal attempt to cross the English Channel.

This dangerous operation, which required a helicopter evacuation for one individual who lost consciousness, is the latest reminder of the chaos surrounding these unauthorized crossings. In total, 119 people were rescued in separate incidents over the weekend.

This latest breach of sovereignty comes just days after Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signed a massive £662 million deal with France, pledging to deploy riot-trained police to northern beaches to stop these crossings.

Taxpayers are on the hook for £501 million in immediate enforcement funding, with an additional £160 million contingent on the effectiveness of these new measures. While the government claims that crossings are down 37% compared to last year, the fact remains that thousands are still attempting to bypass legal immigration channels.

The French Coast Guard continues to warn that the Channel is a treacherous area, yet migrants persist in these illegal voyages, placing an unnecessary burden on international maritime resources and law enforcement agencies.
