In a historic move for the North African nation, King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Zahra El Mansouri as Morocco's first female prime minister.

El Mansouri, a 50-year-old lawyer and the former mayor of Marrakesh, rose to the position after her party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (Pam), emerged as the frontrunner in last week's parliamentary elections. Her appointment marks only the second time in the Arab world that a woman has been tasked with leading a government.

While Morocco operates as a constitutional monarchy, the King retains significant authority and ultimately chose El Mansouri over fellow party member Fouzi Lekjaa. El Mansouri brings a background in business and corporate law to the role, having previously served as a minister for national territory planning and housing.

Despite her party winning 97 seats, she faces a challenging path ahead as she must now navigate the formation of a coalition to reach the 198-seat threshold required for a majority in the 395-member parliament.

With the Islamist Justice and Development Party signaling it will remain in opposition and past tensions with the National Rally of Independents, El Mansouri’s administration will need to demonstrate significant political maneuvering to govern effectively.
