A man in a blue shirt hits a stone memorial with a sledgehammer

In a bold move that has ignited intense debate, Israeli lawmaker Zvi Sukkot of the Religious Zionism party took a sledgehammer to a stone memorial in the Palestinian village of Madama.

Sukkot, who was accompanied by a military escort, made his position clear: the structure, which commemorates individuals killed in various conflicts with Israel, including the PLO-linked battle of Karameh and the intifadas, serves as a glorification of terrorism. 'This is something we cannot leave standing here,' Sukkot stated during the act.

While the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed the group acted without authorization during a security-cleared tour, the incident has highlighted the deep divide within Israeli leadership.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office condemned the act as 'taking the law into one's own hands,' while opposition figures seized the moment to attack the government’s security policies.

Conversely, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich defended his party colleague, slamming the political left for prioritizing the condemnation of a lawmaker over the reality of ongoing terrorism.

As tensions in the West Bank remain high, the incident underscores the escalating friction between those demanding the total removal of symbols honoring anti-Israel combatants and those advocating for strict adherence to established military protocols.
