Brussels Bureaucrats Launch Power Grab Over Children's Online Access

The European Commission's 'EU Kids Act' threatens to override national sovereignty and force state-mandated digital surveillance on families.

The European Commission has unveiled the 'EU Kids Act,' a heavy-handed legislative package designed to dictate how children interact with the digital world. Under the guise of 'wellbeing,' the proposal would ban children under 13 from social media entirely, while forcing those aged 13 to 15 into restrictive 'mini accounts' tethered to parental profiles.

The plan represents a significant expansion of Brussels' reach, as the regulation would be legally binding and supersede the laws of individual member states, stripping them of the ability to opt out.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen claims the move puts parents 'back in the driving seat,' yet the policy relies on a centralized EU age-verification app to monitor access. Tech companies are being targeted with the threat of fines reaching 6% of global sales if they fail to satisfy the Commission's vague requirements for 'safe by design' platforms.

The proposal targets not just traditional social media, but also AI chatbots, online games, and video platforms.

While proponents argue this is a necessary intervention, the initiative faces significant hurdles, including concerns over privacy, freedom of expression, and the practical impossibility of enforcement—a reality already playing out in Australia, where similar bans have failed to keep minors off platforms.

As the EU pushes to centralize control over digital life, the debate highlights a growing tension between state-mandated safety and the rights of families to manage their own affairs without interference from international regulators.
