The security of critical infrastructure in Germany has been dealt a severe blow after an explosive-laden drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The device, which was not the work of amateurs, was spotted near Ukrainian cargo planes, forcing a police response that included a controlled explosion to neutralize the threat.

This incident, coupled with a separate mid-air collision involving another unidentified object and a cargo aircraft, has prompted German officials to acknowledge a new, heightened level of hybrid warfare. Leipzig/Halle serves as a vital hub for NATO military transport and Ukrainian logistics, making it a prime target for hostile actors.

While the Kremlin continues its predictable pattern of denial, the sophistication of the attack points toward state-sponsored sabotage. This is not an isolated event; it follows a pattern of suspicious drone activity over military and energy infrastructure, as well as previous incidents involving incendiary parcels hidden in cargo.

As the drone war reaches the heart of Europe, the vulnerability of Western logistics hubs is becoming impossible to ignore. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has rightly characterized this as a professional threat, signaling that the era of treating these incursions as mere nuisances is over.

The reality is that Western supply chains and military support networks are being actively targeted by foreign powers, and the time for a robust, unapologetic response is long overdue.
