African Football Federations Stand by Gianni Infantino Amid Global Backlash

While critics in the West sharpen their knives, African nations are doubling down on their support for the FIFA president, citing essential financial lifelines.

Gianni Infantino’s grip on FIFA remains firm in Africa, as the continent's football leadership continues to prioritize the tangible financial benefits of his tenure over the noise of global critics.

The executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unanimously reaffirmed its support for the FIFA president, recognizing that his Forward programme has provided the necessary capital for infrastructure and development in regions where commercial and government investment is virtually non-existent.

For many African nations, the choice is simple: Infantino has delivered resources that local governments cannot or will not provide. In Nigeria, which has received millions in FIFA funding for technical centers and training facilities, the NFF remains firmly aligned with the current leadership.

Similarly, officials in Malawi and Gambia have openly praised Infantino, with Gambia’s federation president explicitly stating his intent to support Infantino’s re-election in 2027.

Even in the face of a controversial proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions—which was ultimately scrapped—key figures like Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa praised the president’s decision to withdraw the plan as a 'wise' move that prioritized unity.

While some voices, such as former Sierra Leone FA president Isha Johansen, have raised concerns about over-commercialization, the prevailing sentiment among African football administrators is one of loyalty to a leader who has made the continent a central focus of his investment strategy.

As the global establishment continues to scrutinize his every move, African nations are making it clear that they have no interest in joining a 'public lynching' of a partner who has consistently kept his promises to their programs.
