South Africa is grappling with a horrific surge in violence after the bodies of 12 women were discovered near Johannesburg over a two-month period.

In response to the national outcry, President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered municipalities to conduct immediate safety audits to identify and secure high-risk areas, including abandoned buildings, poorly lit streets, and neglected public spaces.

While four suspects have been arrested, authorities have yet to confirm if the killings are the work of a single perpetrator.

The President acknowledged the government's failure to adequately protect its citizens, noting that South Africa suffers from one of the highest homicide rates in the world, with over 5,400 murders recorded in just a three-month window earlier this year.

Beyond infrastructure audits, the administration is drafting an enforcement package to curb alcohol-related violence, which officials identify as a significant aggravating factor in interpersonal crime.

President Ramaphosa emphasized that while the burden of responsibility lies squarely with the perpetrators, a broader cultural shift is required to address the systemic disregard for the safety of women and girls in the country.
