In a decisive victory for self-defense and common sense, Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has signed a decree ending a decade-long prohibition on carrying legal firearms in public.

For ten years, citizens were effectively disarmed by a temporary measure that was repeatedly extended by successive administrations, leaving law-abiding people vulnerable while criminals operated with impunity.

President de la Espriella rightly identified the absurdity of the status quo, stating, 'It is not right that criminals are armed to the teeth while decent people can't defend themselves.' The new decree restores the rights of nearly 700,000 permit holders to carry their registered firearms, provided their documentation is current.

Despite predictable pearl-clutching from left-wing politicians like Senator Ariel Ávila, who absurdly argued that only the state should possess the means of security, the administration remains firm.

De la Espriella emphasized that this is not a free-for-all, but a restoration of rights, noting that his government is simultaneously cracking down on illegal actors. In fact, authorities have already seized over 15,000 illegal firearms this year, primarily from criminal elements like the Gulf Clan and FARC breakaway factions.

By prioritizing the safety of the citizenry over bureaucratic restrictions, the President has proven that he intends to keep his word and restore order to Colombia.
