The long-overdue pursuit of justice for the victims of the 1996 Brothers to the Rescue tragedy has sent shockwaves through the world's remaining communist regimes. Raúl Castro, who commanded Cuba’s armed forces when the regime ordered the shoot-down of two civilian planes—killing three U.S. citizens—now faces federal charges of murder.
This indictment is a clear signal that the era of impunity for the Castro family’s decades of violence is coming to an end. Predictably, the regimes in Moscow and Beijing have rushed to defend their ideological partner.
The Kremlin, desperate to maintain its foothold in the Caribbean, absurdly claimed that holding a mass murderer accountable 'borders on violence,' while the Chinese foreign ministry demanded the U.S. cease using 'coercion' against the island nation.
These protests reveal more about the insecurity of these authoritarian powers than they do about international law. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has correctly noted that Castro has previously bragged about his role in the attack, and the administration is rightfully keeping all options on the table to ensure justice is served.
As the Trump administration continues to tighten the screws on the Havana regime through targeted sanctions and increased surveillance, the message to the Cuban leadership is clear: the safety of American citizens is not negotiable, and the days of hiding behind the protection of foreign dictators are over.
