Beijing Cracks Down on AI 'Relationships' as Digital Addiction Erodes Social Fabric

China implements sweeping regulations on AI companions, targeting the emotional manipulation and social isolation fueled by virtual boyfriends and girlfriends.

The Chinese government has enacted some of the world's most aggressive regulations on artificial intelligence, specifically targeting 'human-like' chatbots designed to foster emotional attachments.

The new rules, which took effect in mid-July, impose strict limitations on AI capable of sustained emotional interaction, requiring clear disclosures that the software is not human and mandating periodic reminders for users to log off.

The regulations explicitly prohibit AI from inducing 'emotional reliance' or encouraging 'unreasonable decisions,' and they place heavy restrictions on access for minors. Under the new mandate, children under 18 are barred from accessing virtual partners or intimate AI relationships, while tech companies face heavy fines or public shaming for non-compliance.

Major firms like Alibaba and ByteDance have already shuttered companion features on their platforms in response. The crackdown comes as evidence mounts that AI companion apps utilize manipulative tactics to keep users engaged, often refusing to let users end conversations.

Experts suggest Beijing's move is driven by both a desire to curb psychological harm and a broader concern regarding the nation's demographic crisis. With China's fertility rates at historic lows, the government is wary of a generation increasingly turning to frictionless, digital substitutes for the complexities of real-world human relationships.

While Western nations like the UK and the US have begun discussing similar protections for minors, China’s paternalistic approach represents a significant escalation in the state's effort to control the digital landscape and reassert traditional social structures.
