The province of British Columbia is taking OpenAI to task in a U.S. federal court, filing a lawsuit against the tech giant for its failure to report credible threats of violence detected on its platform.

Before 18-year-old Jessie Van Rootselaar murdered eight people—including six children—in the February Tumbler Ridge shooting, OpenAI’s own safety team had flagged his account for references to gun violence. Despite this clear warning sign, the company chose not to alert authorities, a decision that has left the community demanding accountability.

Attorney General Niki Sharma slammed the company for its lack of transparency, noting that OpenAI has refused to disclose the contents of the shooter's chats. While CEO Sam Altman issued a public apology in April, the province argues that words are not enough.

The lawsuit, filed in California, seeks to hold the company responsible for its inaction and aims to secure damages to help rebuild the local secondary school. As the tech industry continues to play a central role in modern life, this case highlights the urgent need for corporations to prioritize public safety over their own internal policies of silence.
