A nationalist movement known as Russkaya Obshina has emerged as a potent force in Russia, conducting hundreds of raids on nightclubs, hostels, and other venues to police behavior they deem contrary to traditional Russian values.
Operating with a high degree of coordination, the group has carried out over 900 raids since 2023, with law enforcement frequently participating in these actions. The group, which strongly supports Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, frames its activities as a necessary defense against foreign cultural intrusion.
In one documented instance, the group targeted a birthday party in Arkhangelsk, leading to a legal conviction for blasphemy against the host after a neon crucifix was discovered on the premises.
While the group claims to be an informal community, investigations suggest it receives financial backing from foundations linked to prominent figures close to the Kremlin. The Russian Orthodox Church has further solidified the group’s influence by encouraging bishops to form partnerships with its members.
Despite criticism from some who argue the group’s methods amount to vigilantism, the Russian government maintains that such civic engagement reflects a growing national interest in preserving historical traditions and moral standards.
