Lula’s desperate election-eve gambling ban reeks of political theater

The Brazilian president is scrambling to save his campaign by outlawing an industry he previously allowed to flourish.

In a move that smells of pure political desperation, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed a provisional order to ban all online sports betting and casinos just days before a high-stakes presidential election.

The 80-year-old leftist, currently locked in a dead heat against Flávio Bolsonaro, is attempting to rebrand himself as a moral crusader, labeling the industry a 'cancer' that must be removed. This sudden pivot comes after years of the industry operating under the legal framework established in 2018.

While Lula now claims he is protecting Brazilian families from financial ruin, his opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, has rightly called the crackdown 'populist, hypocritical and politically motivated.' The economic fallout is already being felt, with major football clubs warning that the loss of betting sponsorships could lead to insolvency, as these firms provided over 1.1 billion Brazilian reais in revenue to top teams in 2025 alone.

Industry experts and the Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gaming have warned that a total ban will not eliminate demand, but rather drive the market underground where consumers lose the protections of a regulated environment.

Lula’s order, which requires congressional approval within 120 days, forces punters to withdraw funds by October 5, effectively pulling the rug out from under a sector that has become a massive source of tax revenue and sports funding.

Whether this eleventh-hour maneuver will sway voters remains to be seen, but it is clear that Lula is willing to dismantle a legal industry to secure his political survival.
