The charade is over for Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, the man who successfully operated a bogus government agency right under the noses of Nigerian officials.
Matthew, who masqueraded as the director general of the so-called Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, was finally apprehended in Osun State following a manhunt by the Force Intelligence Department. His arrest comes after he failed to appear in a Federal High Court to answer for serious charges of forgery and impersonation.
The audacity of the scheme is staggering: Matthew managed to secure office space within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja and even appeared in the 2026 Appropriation Act with a massive 1.3 billion naira allocation. The presidency confirmed that a letter purportedly signed by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila was a complete forgery.
While the Accountant-General’s Office maintains that no public funds were actually disbursed to the fake entity, the fact that such a scam could penetrate the government apparatus has sparked outrage and demands for an independent inquiry.
Despite Matthew’s pathetic attempts to claim his life was in danger to avoid his day in court, he is now headed to Abuja to face the consequences of his criminal deception.
