The digital playground has become a dangerous frontier for minors as Australia’s eSafety Commission exposes significant failures in child protection across the gaming industry.
A damning report found that industry heavyweights—including Steam, Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft—are operating with inconsistent and often inadequate safety measures, leaving children exposed to predators, sexual extortion, and radicalization.
The findings highlight a disturbing lack of accountability from tech giants who have prioritized growth over the safety of their youngest users. Valve, the owner of Steam, was singled out for failing to utilize industry-standard technology to detect and remove harmful content, including child sexual exploitation material.
Furthermore, the report notes that platforms like Minecraft and Fortnite rely on the honor system for age verification, allowing users to simply claim they are adults to bypass restrictions. While some companies claim to be investing in safeguards, the reality is that these platforms have become hunting grounds for predatory adults.
Commissioner Julie Inman Grant rightly demanded that these services 'lift their game' to combat serious harms. It is time for these tech companies to stop hiding behind internal datasets and start taking responsibility for the toxic environments they have allowed to flourish on their networks.
