A catastrophic fire at the Huiteng Footwear factory in Jinjiang, China, has left at least 28 people dead, highlighting the persistent dangers within the nation's massive manufacturing sector. The blaze, which broke out around noon on Thursday, sent thick, black smoke billowing into the sky as workers were reportedly trapped on the roof.
State media reports indicate that nearly 240 individuals were inside the facility when the fire ignited, likely starting among flammable materials stored on the ground floor. While 213 people were successfully evacuated, two later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, and 26 others were found dead after being initially reported missing.
In response to the tragedy, authorities have frozen the company's assets and detained several employees associated with the factory's ownership. President Xi Jinping has publicly called for 'profound lessons' to be learned from this incident, citing a series of major industrial safety failures throughout the year.
As the global manufacturing hub for roughly 20% of the world's sports shoes, Jinjiang is now under intense scrutiny as Beijing attempts to project control over a recurring pattern of lethal industrial negligence.
