President Javier Milei is escalating tensions with the United Kingdom, issuing a two-week ultimatum for the cessation of the Sea Lion oilfield project located off the coast of the Falkland Islands.

Milei, who has labeled the project an 'illegal plundering' of resources, has threatened to drag the UK before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea if his demands are not met. The project, a joint venture between British-based Rockhopper Exploration and Israel's Navitas Petroleum, holds valid licenses issued by the Falkland Islands government.

The residents of the islands, who voted 99.8% in favor of remaining a British overseas territory in a 2013 referendum, have made their desire for self-determination clear. Despite this, Milei continues to challenge British sovereignty, even after criticizing the United Nations for failing to support Argentina's territorial claims.

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has dismissed the threat, noting that Argentina lacks the military capability to seize the islands. This latest posturing comes decades after the 1982 conflict, in which a British military task force successfully defended the territory against an Argentine invasion.

While Milei frames the oil extraction as a 'clear and present danger,' the project remains a legitimate economic endeavor backed by the people who actually live on the islands.
