Arrested Nigerian Army Private Mohammed Yusuf wearing a T shirt with 69 written on it

The Nigerian military has taken a necessary step by arresting Private Mohammed Yusuf, who was caught attempting to flee the country after allegedly supplying military uniforms to terrorist and criminal groups. Yusuf, who deserted his unit earlier this month, was apprehended at a bus stop in Maiduguri.

This arrest is not an isolated incident but a grim confirmation of the internal rot that has allowed militant Islamists and kidnapping syndicates to operate with impunity for over a decade.

With thousands of killings and kidnappings recorded by the National Human Rights Commission, the evidence of collusion between security personnel and the very criminals they are sworn to fight is mounting.

Reports from survivors describe kidnappers laughing and shaking hands with security forces, while others have noted suspicious logistical support, such as helicopters visiting insurgent camps.

Despite previous court-martials and warnings from officials like Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum about informants within the armed forces, the systemic failure persists. Whether driven by greed, inadequate pay, or ideological subversion, the presence of enemies within the ranks is a betrayal of the nation and its citizens.

The military must now move beyond mere acknowledgement and conduct a ruthless purge to restore integrity to its operations and secure the safety of the Nigerian people.
