A disastrous attempt to privatize football assets has left the Fifa boss isolated and facing a coordinated revolt from global confederations.

Gianni Infantino, once considered untouchable as the head of world football's governing body, now finds his presidency in jeopardy following a failed attempt to sell stakes in Fifa competitions to private firms. The clandestine nature of the deal, executed without proper consultation, has alienated even his closest allies.

Uefa, long a critic of Infantino’s leadership, has escalated its opposition by threatening a total boycott of Fifa competitions, including the World Cup. The rebellion has spread globally, with the Concacaf confederation and even historically loyal members of the Asian Football Confederation distancing themselves from the embattled president.

The exodus of top-level support continued as senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro and chief operating officer Kevin Lamour resigned from their posts. While Infantino is attempting to weather the storm by backtracking on the investment plan and courting support from nations like Qatar, Morocco, and Egypt, his future remains uncertain.

Critics are now exploring avenues to force his resignation or trigger an extraordinary congress to hold a vote of no confidence.

Whether Infantino can survive this self-inflicted crisis or will be forced to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Sepp Blatter, depends on his ability to retain enough of the 211 member associations to block a 106-vote threshold for removal.

For now, the global football establishment is engaged in a high-stakes power struggle that could permanently alter the governance of the sport.
